Here's a photo taken June 5 of Scratch and Scout with the iPod shuffle. Below it, a look back at them with the shuffle on that first night. Look how much they've grown!
PS...as I write this Scratch and Scout are, as usual, sitting on me.

So how would you rate chickens as pets, as compared to let's say, a dog.
Better than Tinker?
Well, overall dogs are still the best pets. Chickens don't seem to have the range of personality interactiveness that dogs have. And obviously there are a lot of things you can do with dogs that aren't so easy with chickens, like say, take them to the beach or throw a ball in the water for them to go after.
But I would posit that chickens are at least as interesting as dogs, at least for the novice chicken owner. Remember that show called "Kids Say the Darndest Things?" Well, chickens do the darndest things! They're weird! And it's fascinating! They're just so fun to have hanging around the house and tottering about in the yard.
And when eggs start coming...mmmm! Dogs can't do that!
It's clear that roosters, while really neat, can be a bit of a problem. But from what I've seen, a hen is nothing but a delight.
So overall, I'd say dogs are better pets, but I think no yard would be truly complete without both a wonderful dog or two AND a few hens clucking about.
I won't even bother you about cats, because we all know they suck balls.
Who asked the original question? DMS? Just curious.
Spoken by a man who knows...a man who has read and loved the volume "You Can Train Your Cat" by Paul Loeb.
Yes, I asked the original question.
